A Joyful Hospitality Newsletter

from Amber Dawn Schultheis

Good weekend, to ya!

How's this season change treating you, friend? I really love transitions: a shift in weather means pulling from a different part of the closet, new seasonal produce to enjoy, and little milestones to celebrate.

Spring often brings a season of movement for me. Getting outside, moving my body, momentum in some of my ambitions (in and outside of the kitchen!), and finding renewed joy in very simple things.

I hope this season brings you unexpected delight and reasons to laugh out loud (the full body, head thrown back, belly bouncing kind).

Let's Get Into It...

When our son was little, we kept a harmonica in the car. Traffic jam? Harmonica jam session! Long wait at the bank? Break out the carmonica! We used it as a silly way to announce ‘we've arrived' at our destination, as if we were aboard some kind of hosted train experience.

I can’t quite pinpoint the moment, but I’m certain this was inspired by my dear Papa, Jerry. He was sweet, playful, and made everything feel special.

This idea of taking something as routine and boring as running errands and turning it into a set of memories that will last a lifetime - it changes the way we feel in our day to day movements.

I'm always looking for the "carmonica" moments. The story-worthy instants that make a big difference in relationships and the way we make people (including ourselves) feel.

These days, I randomly tuck a harmonica into my purse when I'm leaving town for business or going to a high stress appointment. A gentle reminder to make the tough stuff fun and to look for ways to create a little magic.

What's one way you can create a bit of magic in the mundane?

Joyful Living: Spring Soups, Market Finds, and Unplugging with Print

Hospitality Moment: I arrived for a meeting yesterday at one of my favorite local cafes only to realize I'd forgotten my wallet. I had been chatting with an older gentleman in front of me in line - we were both enamored with the vast assortment of sweet treats. When I got to the register, I told the barista of my error and asked if I could return in an hour or two to pay for my cup of drip coffee. My new pastry-loving friend overheard my debacle and insisted on covering my drink. I resisted at first, but then just said, "THANK YOU!" "You owe me one." My simple mistake created a meaningful moment - and a reminder that we're here to look out for each other. I hope to run into him again soon and look forward to returning the favor.

Recipe Highlights: I had the joy of teaming up with Katya from Dubuque Bakery on a cozy, early spring recipe pairing that I'm hoping you'll love as much as we do. This one isn't quite on the blog (coming soon with all of my notes), but we mocked up the cutest little recipe card with simple instructions, so I've included that here in the meantime.

If you're in the Greater Seattle Area, I've included Dubuque Bakery's BreadMobile information here so you can reserve your artisan sourdough and seasonal treats and find her current location for pick up. She is worth going out of your way for.

Currently Listening: I had the privilege of attending the Unreasonable Hospitality Summit in April (more on this later, and probably forever) and got to see The Lone Bellow on a rooftop in downtown Nashville. They're soulful, Americana, and their music showcases everything I love about Southern Hospitality.

The Snohomish Farmers Market Project

I'm delighted to be partnered with the Snohomish Farmers Market and Snohomish Film Company this season. From May - October, we'll be sharing stories and inspiration for how to engage with your local market. Recipes, gifting ideas, and how to have the best possible time engaging with the farmers growing your food. Follow along for highlights on Facebook or Instagram, if you're interested!

Until Next Time...

Are you making space to do more of what you love, friend? Or making time to figure out what that might be? Shoot me a note - I'd love to hear what you're up to.

cheers & gratitude,

amber dawn

The Host Notes

Amber Dawn turns the old 'hostess with the mostest' adage on its head and encourages you to create meaningful experiences by scrapping the bits that do not bring you joy. You'll also get a behind-the-scenes look at building a food blog in a saturated market, what hospitality looks like in the thick of grief, and, of course, crowd-pleasing recipes straight from Amber's chaotic kitchen. Welcome! You're going to love it here.
